I Got Paid $60 To Eat French Fries

by Mike

Paid market research Studies Are A Fun Way To Make Extra Money.

This week I participated in my first paid market research study and I actually got paid $60 to taste french fries!

Marketing research companies are all over the country and I bet there’s one where you can earn extra money too.   First let me explain how paid market research programs work and then I’ll tell you more about my experience so you know what to expect.

Marketing research is incredibly important in the world of business. Just think about it.  If you were CEO of a corporation that was considering offering a new product, wouldn’t you want to get some feedback on the idea before you spent millions of dollars developing it? Maybe you’d create a few prototypes and let people test them out to see if they like them?

So companies hire marketing research firms to run focus groups, surveys, and taste testing panels to get objective opinions about their products BEFORE they commit to spending a fortune developing them.

That’s where you come in!  When you sign up for a paid market research program you can actually get paid to drink coffee, test new kitchen utensils, or watch pilot episodes of new sitcoms.

How I Got Paid to Eat French Fries

One of my wife’s girlfriends recently started participating in focus groups and she got my wife to sign up too.   When you first sign up you fill out a short questionnaire so they can get an idea of what kind of paid market research studies you would be eligible for.

When a new study is ready, you’ll get a call asking if you’d like to participate.  There may be some additional questions to determine your eligibility.   My wife started getting calls right away…a couple a week actually, but the timing just didn’t work out (most studies are during the day and she would need a babysitter).

When they called about the french fry testing they mentioned they were primarily looking for men so they asked if there was a man in the house willing to participate.  I love french fries so you can bet I was willing!  :)

The marketing research office is not far from my home so I was able to swing by on my way home from work.  I signed in and chatted with some other members of the test panel in the waiting room.  After a few minutes they ushered us into the testing room.

We sat down as the testers handed out the questionnaires and then they brought out little plates with french fries to taste.  There were 3 sets of fries and after each we had to fill out a survey describing what we liked and disliked about each.   The testers came around and made sure each survey was complete and then we were excused.  On the way out I stopped by the front desk and the receptionist handed me an envelope with $60 inside.

That’s easy money baby!  :)

To find a research program or focus group near you just do a Google search and see where the closest locations are.

You shouldn’t expect to get rich participating in paid market research studies, but it is certainly possible to earn a a couple hundred bucks a month while having fun testing out new products and tasting food.

I used to get called all the time! But I haven’t heard from the local one by me in years.

Best one I ever did was to discuss different packaging for Dunks coffee.

Maybe they closed shop? You should check if there are any others in your area.

My mom books for a research company here and you’d be surprised how many people sign up and never show. I know they might think its a scam, but dont sign up or cancel early if you dont want to do it. Its such easy money and these companies count on peeps to show so they can get their opinions.

Why would people sign up and not come? It really is easy money and you are well compensated for your time.

This sounds like my dream job — to eat french fries and get paid for it! I can’t participate in market surveys because I’m part of the media, but when I was younger, I used to just say I was a college student so I could make that extra $$$.

I know, right? Maybe if I become a stay-at-home mom (a girl can dream she lives in the 1950s, right?)

My wife participated in a beauty products focus group once and they sent her home with a bag of sample products–she thought she was in heaven!

Cool, we’re looking forward to doing some more testing so we’ll see what is next.

Evan, it helps getting you booked if you call the recruiter, we have set ones for each person, and ask occasionally if theres any groups you qualify for. My moms database is huge so sometimes it helps get you booked calling them.

Also, typically the past participation is 3 months. Sometimes 6 monthes or a year. That means they want you to wait that time between doing them. They dont want people making a living from it.

And its been a pretty dead year as far as focus groups go. Companies arent wanting to spend the extra money. We’re only now picking up. But Summer tends to be a dead time too though normally. The heavy time is in the Winter.

that sounds really cool…. i have heard they do these at really weird hours during the day and it can be hard if you have a job to try these out.

i have also heard stories from UCLA that people would tell you before hand that you should respond certain ways to ensure they get the outcome they are looking for….have you heard this before?

Well most of the fries I tasted were pretty crappy…I hope they don’t hold that against me.

Hi! Did it when I was in college, and it was lots of fun. You have to factor in the time commitment and make sure the time spent is worth the cash earned.
I must thank you for the Yakezie searh screen. I really like it, very useful.
And, this post is going on my site tomorrow!!

I wonder if they have many chocolate tasting focus groups? :)

A friend of mine signed up to help ‘size’ car seats, and she got over 100 dollars. They needed kids to sit in the car seats and such (not while driving, just in the car). It was really easy cash.

I am going to look into this further Mike, thanks!

That’s an easy $60! Woot! I participate in some general marketing research surveys about twice a year and receive coupons for it ($5 off Glade Products or 1/2 off local restaurants, etc). I didn’t know I could find paid research…now I have to keep an eye out. :-)

For sure, do some research. I bet there are some in Texas too

That’s so awesome! I’m totally gonna look this up for my area. Are they market research firms pretty flexible with when you come by? Is that something you set up with them personally? It’d probably have to be an after work thing for me. But that’s awesome! $60 is gas money.

I can’t speak for all of them but the one I participated in had set times. And yea a lot of them are during the day so its tough for people who work. Unless you have a flexible schedule you need to stick to the ones in the evenings.

Brandy August 18, 2010 at 1:20 pm

The ones we book have times during the day and into the evening. Sometimes on Saturdays too.

Brandy, what part of the country are you in?

Brandy August 18, 2010 at 1:38 pm

Mike, Im in Middle Tennessee. There are 3 different Focus Group companies here. I found them years ago by googling Focus Groups Nashville, Tn and they all came up. My mom works for one and I have friends that do focus groups for all 3 companies.

I must have seen this mentioned on at least 10 roundups by now… ;)

You know what I’d like? Getting paid to eat pizza… mmm, that would be so good. Not very primal, I know, but I still get cravings whenever I just think of pizza…
