I’m probably going to take some flak from all of you Facebook-fanatics out there, but to hell with it.
Facebook is a big waste of time!
There…I said it. What are you gonna do about it?
Now before you leave some long and ranting comment telling me how wrong I am…hear me out.
Disclaimer – yes, I do have a personal Facebook account that I use for keeping in touch with former classmates and coworkers. If that’s what you use FB for then you’re smarter than the average bear.
The problem I have with Facebook (besides their questionable privacy policy) is that it can quickly get you hooked on silly diversions like Farmville, Mafia Wars, or whatever the current flavor of the week is.
Not that there’s anything wrong with an occasional diversion. But seriously, how many hours do you spend tending to your farms, filling out pointless questionnaires, or sending digital drinks to your friends?
Isn’t there something more productive you could be doing with your time?
You could read a book. Take a class and learn something new. Increase your skills and your earning power.
Those are just a few ways that you could spend your time improving yourself or earning more money. Use your time wisely and build your financial security instead of pissing away your time for nothing.
PS – As I was writing this article for my blog, I looked over at my wife on her desktop and guess what site she was on?

I have a Facebook account, but I haven’t been on in months. I just reply to emails people send me in FB once in a while and that’s that.
You know what else is a time suck? Having a blog! I swear, I must spend 3-4 hours a day on blog-related activities like reading my favorite blogs, writing for my blog, answering comments, answering emails, submitting to carnivals once every week or two, and making little changes to my layout. Sometimes, even if I could technically be done, I just keep Gmail up on my laptop IN CASE someone might email me or make a blog comment. I’m an addict…
Blogging CAN be a big waste of time if you’re blogging about what you ate for dinner. But if you’re building a business and a stream of income…I think that’s a valuable use of your time.
Can I get an Amen!!?? I am probably one of the few Facebook holdouts in the world. I am so set against it because 1) I have watched what a time suck it is, 2) If I really wanted to keep in touch with people from “back in the day” then I would have, 3) I don’t care that my friend just ate a piece of cheese….and she shouldn’t care if I have either, and 4) I have enough other things in my life that I am not a slave to one website that seems to have created a cult following of lemmings that feel the need to post every thought and feeling.
Gee…..do you think I don’t like FB?
Yakezie…..
How do you REALLY feel Mysti? LOL
I deleted my account last year and still haven’t re-uped.
Are you sure? I’ve read a few articles indicating that FB makes it exceptionally difficult to delete your account. Make sure its deleted and not just “deactivated” in which case all of your personal info is still there.
I have a facebook that serves the purpose of talking to my family members. Who are all over the States. I only get on there for them.
Hey Nicole, that’s a valid use to me. My wife has relatives in Italy and a girlfriend in Greece, so its a lot cheaper to send email and use Facebook than to call all the way from NJ.
If you don’t play the games and sending “gifts” route, it’s not so bad. I was pretty addicted to Bejeweled on there though for awhile.

Yes, bejeweled is another one I see people on all the time…addicting!
I love Facebook, but don’t participate in those games – I just use it to keep in touch with people, organise events, share photos.
I actually have re-friended about half a dozen ‘old friends’ that I lost contact with as I travelled around the world, and now we live in hte same city again. So I have found it is very useful in that respect.
If you dislike Facebook, do you also dislike Twitter? I can’t get into it.
I do use Twitter to promote this blog, but truthfully I don’t really get that either.
I admit it, total time waster. I’m glad someone said it.
I kept track of what I did with my time on Friday and Saturday and too many hours were spent at Gmail! I don’t like Facebook but have an account. I like Twitter, but just can’t find any more time to squeeze it in. Writing for my blog is about all I can manage aside from my “regular” job, doing my husband’s accounting/secretarial work for his businesses. Feel guilty much of the time if I sit down and watch tv for five minutes.
I think if most people kept track of everything they did for a few days they’d be astounded at how much time they spend doing “nothing”.

Agree – Facebook can be a huge time waster, just like everything – only beneficial in moderation.

Amen to your entire post. I’ve been saying it for months! Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, all that crap… Except of course, my twitter where I share fee stuff.
